Color:  Croton Tabular chert is very homogenous and opaque chert ranging in color from a creamy gray to a light gray with a off white to light tan cortex.

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment is commonly used and changes the color to a medium to medium dark gray with a satin to glossy luster.

Croton Tabular Chert is associated with the Croton formation of the St. Louis formation of southeastern Iowa.  It occurs in flat seams in the Croton formation.  Primary outcroppings occur in Henry, Jefferson, and Keokuk counties, Iowa.
